TBCBSP General Meeting                                                                                       February 2, 2014


Joyce called the meeting to order at 3:08.


The Pledge of Allegiance was conducted.


Joyce welcomed everyone.


Joyce introduced Bob Greer and Carolyn Billman, who are new members.


The December minutes, prepared by Heather Watkins, were approved as presented.


Joyce welcomed Bob back, following his hip surgery and recovery.


The December and January treasurer’s reports were read by Bob and were approved as read.  The society currently has 389 members, which is 21 less than 1 year ago.


Covered Bridge Reports from Members:


Jim Lockart has covered bridge pictures to give away.


Steve Wolfhope took a picture of Pinetown Bridge with the horse and buggy going through it; it is on display on the front table.  He saw Greisemers Bridge for the first time since it was painted, and took nice photos with the snow.  He also saw Pleasantville Bridge.


Clyde Scheib reported that the lights are back on inside Kennedy Bridge, after being out for about a year.  They had 2 perfect nights for the luminaries in December.


Katie Helm saw a TV commercial with a covered bridge.


Pat Cook went to Pinetown Bridge after the December meeting and again today; what a nice change.  She also saw 17 romantic shelters in GA, FL, and SC.


Olive Jones brought a display board showing photos of her Christmas garden, made from Kuhn's Fording Covered Bridge.


Officer Reports


President -- Joyce Soroka -- no report


First VP -- Jim Smedley


He and Gloria visited all of the Maryland covered bridges in the last month and took photos with the snow.

Second VP -- Greg Williams


Visited Rock and Zimmerman Bridges in Schuylkill County just after Christmas.  His sister gave him a covered bridge t-shirt for Christmas; he think it's Sam Wagner bridge.  He also received an ornament of Fowlersville Bridge.


Third VP -- Tom Walczak -- not  present, but he sent his report to Joyce:


Wooden Covered Spans will be going to the printer this week and mailed later this month.


Tom needs articles from members to put into WCS.  He has limited information for the publication, so your help is needed for articles. 


Fourth VP -- Tina Conn


Tina presented a $1,000 check from our Society, in memory of George, to the Bartram's Bridge Joint Preservation Board at their quarterly meeting; the photo is on display at the front of the room.  Work will be done to replace the cedar shake roof, power wash and paint, and install decorative LED lighting with timers.

Thanked everyone who sent cards, emails, phone calls, etc. following his surgery.

Newsletter Co-Editors -- Jim and Gloria Smedley


Today is the deadline for PA Crossings.  Jim thanked everyone who sent information for the newsletter, especially Michael Chorazy, who wrote a story about the new Maple Highlands Trail Bridge (OH-28-04).


Jim clarified that WCS contains historic bridge information, old photos, or stories about trips to visit bridges; the newsletter is for current news.


Sharing sessions


Dave Evans did today's session on firetruck name plates.  We need volunteers to sign up for 2014 sessions beginning with March.  There is a sign-up sheet on the front table.


Reports of illness or death of members:


Joyce reported that Dolly Sitler passed away on Friday, January 3, 2014.  Dolly is survived by her husband of 70 plus years, Harold, who is also a member of our Society.

Joyce also reported that the president of the National Society for the Preservation of Covered Bridges, David Wright, passed away December 29.  David had been president of the National Society since 1989.  During the past 24 years, he devoted his time towards National Society projects and promoting its goals.  David was not a member of our Society, but was well-known throughout the covered bridge and historic preservation communities as an outspoken proponent of repairing and restoring our nation’s covered bridges according to strict historic standards.


Betty Miller reported that Loretta Zvarick died.

New Business:


The annual Executive Board planning meeting was held at the Tenant house at Pool Forge on January 11.  At the meeting the Vice Presidents determined the committees they will chair for the 2014 Society year.

Announcement of Covered Bridge and related events:


Betty Miller announced that Poole Forge will have its annual quilt show March 10-15.


Announcement of next meeting date


Next meeting is March 2, 2014 at Paul’s Episcopal Church –2 p.m.

The program will be “Owning a Covered Bridge” by Chris Young, President of the Columbia County Covered Bridges Association and Columbia County Commissioner.


We ask that members bring a food item to help the church’s mission for the food bank.


The Program today was “Construction of the Colemanville Covered Bridge Replacement” by Robert Navitski, P.E.  It was held prior to the business meeting.
